A book is like a friend. We understand the world and life, or even observe ourselves through texts, and have a deep realization of oneself that we are not alone. PMQ invites different people from design and culture sectors to recommend a book, so that you can enrich yourselves as book therapy.

Why would you recommend this book?

Wesley:Epidemic has put the hassle and bustle on hold. Time passes by but we suddenly feel like our time has multiplied with no use. Perhaps it is a good time for everyone to explore something new. So this book that I recommend is for everyone who would like to have a sip of what Architecture is – something that I have devoted myself in for more than a decade now.

"101 Things I Learned in Architecture School" by The MIT Press is a small handy book that is extremely fun and easy to read. It pairs up 101 sketches with 101 phases that explain 101 things about Architecture in its simplest terms. Its content covers a full range from Architecture as a concept/design to Architecture as a career.

Architecture is always there and around us. While most people think of it as buildings, it is more about how you read and think about space. Similar to alphabets, characters and numbers, space is a language for use and communication. Architecture is the study to master this language. So contrary to what most people think, Architecture is more of an arts subject than science. As the book said, “An architect knows something about everything. An engineer knows everything about one thing.”

I hope this book can arouse people’s curiosity about their surroundings, and think more about how they can understand space and design to contribute to a better living environment. The epidemic can limit our movement but not our imagination. Feel more and dream more!
