YES! KIDS CAN!
This summer, let the kids take charge!
Creativity is never an exclusive trait of creative talents. If we allow children to cultivate creativity from a young age it will surely become their life-long asset. In the foreseeable future, our society will not only yearn for tech-savvy professionals, but also those who are creative and human-centric minded. Creativity is therefore crucial to make the world a better place to live in.
We believe that creativity is inborn and children are innately and infinitely creative. In what ways could we help them to boost their confidence and put creativity into action in their daily lives?
PMQ has partnered up with multidisciplinary designers and creative teams from architecture, art and STEM sectors to stimulate kids’ creative instincts, while unleashing their creativity and confidence. By adapting the five-stage practice system of Design Thinking – a methodology of creative problem-solving that includes the steps to ‘Empathize’, ‘Define’, ‘Ideate’, ‘Prototype’, and ‘Test’ – kids will learn to spot problems, generate solutions and finally actualise a design through empathetic and multi-perspective thinking. The process of trial and error to problem-solving will be enriched through teamwork and interpersonal communication.
Let’s give our children space and trust to see their creativity take flight! YES! KIDS CAN!
YES! KIDS CAN Summer Camp (promoting to P3 – P4)
Our teaching team—headed by architect, lecturer and cross-disciplinary creative Wyan Yeung— will lead P3 and P4 students-to-be into the community to listen and collect everyday sounds. Through ‘hearing’, ‘touching’ and ‘seeing’, students will learn about ‘emotions’ and the ways of expressing them through sound. The three-day summer camp will begin with ‘empathy’—the first and paramount element in Design Thinking—as students observe with their eyes, listen with their hearts to understand the feelings, thoughts and needs of others. They will eventually learn to create melodies on an electronic mixing programme, understand the relationship between colors and emotions, and apply the knowledge to a 3D paper sculpture. It will be a creative journey for them to learn about expressing emotions while responding to others’ needs through curated sound.
Programme rundown
Day 1 | Forget about notes and scores! Mentors will reintroduce the concept of music and its relation to emotions to students from a whole new perspective. They will form teams and visit the surrounding neighborhood to listen and collect sounds. Students will be guided to identify a user to learn about his/her thoughts and needs by the end of the day. |
Day 2 | After getting to know their users’ feelings and needs, students will learn to use an electronic mixing programme to organise the collected sounds from the day before into a melody. From there, each student will begin prototyping their own paper sound amplifier based on the curated track. |
Day 3 | Through a series of fun activities, students will come to understand the nuanced relationship between colors, images and different emotions. They can then apply the knowledge to designing their paper sound amplifiers. After bouts of fine tuning, students will be able to play their unique symphonies through the amplifiers on stage. Teachers and parents are cordially invited to join the presentation (exact time to be confirmed). |
