How do we begin to understand our city from a young age?
More than visiting grand squares and famous sights, children’s regular forays into city streets, playgrounds, and making friends there, or stretching their imagination on the rocking horses and slides, these repeated routines often become the cornerstones of childhood memories and our initial impressions of the city.
Highly dense Hong Kong has formed a myriad of urban textures and spaces between mountains and seas, giving birth to numerous small-scale public play spaces. Hong Kong has over 600 public children’s playgrounds. Given that a generation’s playground shapes a generation’s understanding of the city, childhood memories, and a sense of belonging; what then should be the chemistry for creating unique playground environment and its nurturing culture for Hong Kong?
Hong Kong is currently in the nurturing stage of a new generation of public children’s playgrounds. According to the 2019 Policy Address, Hong Kong plans to renew 170 public children’s playgrounds in the coming years, incorporating public participation as an indispensable part of the design process. This exhibition includes the co-creation outcomes from numerous children, parents, and over thirty schools and institutions during the public participation process from 2021-2022. We invite everyone to share their imagination of an ideal play environment, contributing to the record of nurturing a new generation of public children’s playgrounds.
