Japanese children’s picturebooks are highly regarded worldwide. Its origin can be traced all the way back to twelfth century illustrated scrolls, such as The Genji Monogtari Emaki (The Tales of Genji Scroll). Former veteran editor and children’s literature expert Mr Akira Nogami will walk us through the history of Japanese children’s picturebooks from the ancient scrolls, to the children’s reading materials in different eras to the post-3.11 picturebooks.
Mr Nogaki will also talk about the impact on children’s books by different historical factors, such as the WWII ideological censorship, the postwar new era, and the emergence of new printing technologies.
The talk will be conducted in Japanese with Cantonese interpretation.
