This September, let’s discover the beauty of lacquer art at PMQ Taste Library through a dialogue with the lacquer artist Jun Anzai!
Natural lacquer should come from the sap of the lacquer tree. It is applied in numerous thin layers on the surface, each being allowed to dry before the addition of the next. Core materials can be made of wood, bamboo or textiles. Lacquerware is not only durable for uses in everyday life, but also admirable for their unique beauty and texture. The making of lacquerware is regarded as the most ancient craft, which has a longer history than porcelain in China.
Lacquer artist Jun Anzai and Founder of The Gallery by SOIL Susanna Pang will lead you into the world of lacquer art this September at PMQ Taste Library. Jun Anzai will share his life in Wajima where he was an apprentice with the renown lacquer art master Akito Akagi. Wajima, a city located in Ishikawa Prefecture, is internationally known for its traditional and sophisticated Japanese lacquerware making, namely Wajima-nuri.
In this talk, Jun and Susanna will discuss what lacquer art is about and explain why this art has become so rare these days. The speakers will demonstrate the use of lacquer vessels for everyday life such as flower vases and sake cups. Participants will get hands-on experience using these vessels and find out how they are different from vessels of other materials. That gentleness and softness you feel comes from the all-natural materials they are made of. Sign up now to save yourself a seat.
Language: Conducted mainly in Cantonese
Limited seats available, prior registration required!
