At Gallery tete, we will hold the solo exhibition “Earth Ware” by Japanese craftsman Rimpei Watanabe starting on Saturday, October 26. This exhibition marks his first solo show overseas.
Mr. Watanabe primarily creates pottery in the Kansai region of Japan, specifically in Osaka and Okayama. Initially focused on dyeing, he was inspired by ancient tea utensils he encountered in a museum, leading him to construct an all-subterranean kiln in 2002. Using primitive methods, he has gradually accumulated firing data, continuously exploring and experimenting in his daily practice.
This exhibition showcases the results of his ongoing dialogue with the Earth, referred to as “Earthenware” (objects born from the earth). The display includes plates, bowls, and specially crafted tea cups, as well as vases of various shapes and sizes. The unique texture of his “kohiki ” (white clay) and the bold brushwork reveal a beautiful combination, while the variations in shape express his distinctive character. Watanabe’s works profoundly reflect his personality.
Additionally, the artist will be present on the first and second days of the exhibition. We look forward to your visit!
