About Exhibition

The saying “I am not a fish, how do I know the dreams of fish?” from the Zhuangzi‘s reflects the human inability to fully comprehend the inner workings of other beings. This profound idea lies at the heart of this artistic creation – as an outsider, how can we truly understand the joys and sorrows of a fish?

The artist uses the childhood favorite of plastic fishing toys as a metaphor for their own past. Just like the toys confined within a fixed frame, the artist too was once content with a stagnant life, lacking the courage and curiosity to explore the unknown. Passively waiting for opportunities to arise, they never actively pursued further possibilities.

But the artist wishes to breathe new life into these toy fish. Through this work, they aim to express their desire to break free from their past self-limitations and explore a broader spectrum of life‘s potential. No longer dwelling in the comfort of a repetitive existence, they bravely venture beyond the constraints, seeking to find their own meaning and worth.

The artist imagines the toy fish breaking out of their confined space to embrace the unknown – perhaps they will ride the winds and chase the sun? Or even if captured, find a different flavor to their existence? This is what the artist aspires to achieve – embracing the diversity and infinite possibilities of life.

This work is a reflection and a reimagining of the artist’s past self. By imbuing the toy fish with renewed vitality, the artist is redefining their own life’s journey, moving towards a more vibrant future. This self-awakening and transcendence is the most poignant aspect of this artistic creation.”
