In the mind of every artist is a repository of the finest, most beautiful materials they have encountered. The best artisans add instinct and intuition to their material knowledge, combining to bring the artists’ messages to life.
This exhibition is a celebration of jeweler’s materials and their innate qualities, uncovering the surprising beauty of wearables made from extraordinary elements and the underlying meaning of such pieces. As you wander around the gallery space, the cumulative impression is dazzling. From wooden fibre arrayed into optical illusions to laser cut springbuck hides, a variety of materials rarely associated with concepts of jewellery making, and innovative uses of conventional materials that will challenge your preconceptions of what jewellery is.
The objects and wearables selected for this exhibition present a wealth of creative endeavours; each piece telling a story of how the maker brought their own signature style of materiality into jewellery, allowing audiences a glimpse into their unique creative practices. Moulds are of broken when new materials are introduced to accustomed methodologies; each venturous combination is a symbol of the maker’s sensitivity to, and expertise on the ‘Material Matters’.
We hope you will enjoy the richness and variety curated, and that each one of the pieces you are about to encounter sparks a change in your penchant for jewellery.
