Conducted by Japanese contemporary lacquer artist Shoko Tauruma, this two-hour workshop will feature “Haku-e” technique. It is one of the methods of Japanese lacquer art that decoration is achieved by the application of gold or silver leaf to motifs painted in urushi (natural lacquer).

Programme:
1/ Overview of Japanese decoration methods
2/ Introduction of tools and materials
3/ Demonstration of “Haku-e” techniques
4/ Design of patterns
5/ Urushi and gold leaf applications

Each participant will gain hands-on experience with urushi and gold leaf applications on a pair of chopsticks and a piece of chopsticks rest.

*The fee will cover all tools & materials for use at the class. Participant will take home a pair of chopsticks and a piece of chopsticks rest of your own design. Note: Natural lacquer may take time to dry under a certain level of humidity and temperature. It will take a week for your finished pieces to be ready for use.
