“It is too easy to say that the way to follow Tao is to simply go along with the flow of life. Sometimes, like the carp, we must know when to go it alone.”–Deng Ming-Dao Presented by jason /sveinn contemporary art, “Flow” examines the use of flow and movement in the unique art, artistic practices and aesthetics of artists Pang Yongjie (China), Kan-Zan-Loc (Japan), Toshio Iezumi (Japan), Yosuke Miyao (Japan), Yoko Togashi (Japan) and Hotaru Visual Guerrilla (Spain).

For thousands of years, the concept of flow has been a subject of philosophical discourse. The ability to enter the creative flow – the mental state of being completely present and fully immersed in their art – separates the exceptional artist from a merely good one. Flow also plays an important part in the artistic voice of an artist. Whether it’s in the paint as it moves upon the surface of the canvas, in the movement portrayed in the work, the shape of a sculpture and or the way the audience experiences digital art.

In his Mirror Flower and Summer Garden series of works, Pang Yongjie (b. 1968) chooses a minimalist approach, using a limited palette of oil paints applied thickly with a few sparing strokes to not only portray Tang dynasty ideals of beauty but to reflect the core principles of Zen Buddhism, to go with the flow, living life in harmony with the natural order of things. Kan-Zan-Loc (b. 1964) uses the richly saturated color of Ganryo, a traditional Japanese paint made of powdered shellfish and natural indigo-plant-blue to create the intricately fluid imagery of the Via Lactea and Eclipsis Linae-Eclipsis Solis series of paintings.

To emphasize the theme of the exhibition, the booth will be divided into three zones: one wall dedicated to the digital art of Hotaru Visual Guerrilla. This will be complimented by walls featuring paintings by Pang Yongjie (opposite wall) and Kan-Zan-Loc (center)respectively. The glass art by the triad of glass artists will be placed artistically on a console with focused warm white spotlights to highlight the luminescence of glass giving the audience an opportunity to interact with each work from a 3-dimensional perspective. This layout creates a flow allowing each artwork to shine that also invites visitors to enjoy the lines and movement of each work individually. The audience will be given a
gallery pack which contains information of the “Flow” exhibit.
