Amidst ever-changing tides, the St. James’ Creation ceramists stayed calm and grounded in their craft, quietly turning months and years of practice into a future of possibilities. With eyes on the present, they have been forming a different kind of scenery in their palms.

“Clay for Tomorrow” presents the world as seen, touched and yearned for by the ceramists.

These artworks, born through a long process of creative growth and ceramic training, were created by the ceramists under the guidance of local ceramic artists Suzy Cheung, Samantha Kan and Hikki Lau. Through the journey, all ceramists have gradually come to realise their own creative directions in the process of developing their own artistic languages. The exhibition also showcases selected works created by the ceramists under the guidance of ceramic artists Rosanna Li and Gary Tse in the “Clay for Tomorrow” project.

WHO ARE THE CERAMISTS?

The ceramists are budding artists whose works have appeared at the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field, around the Sai Kung Hoi, at the Kennedy Town Belcher Bay Promenade, in public libraries, at your home, on your dinner table even. Their works are scattered across the world, but their worlds have always existed among us.

Language pales as a means of communication for the ceramists in comparison with clay, their most adept medium of expression. In the past, the public has been privy to a slice of their worlds through their singular art pieces. Today, by presenting a series of artworks, the exhibition showcases the creative journeys of 15 ceramists, and the worlds that they have created.

ABOUT ST. JAMES’ CREATION AND THE “CLAY FOR TOMORROW” PROJECT

St. James’ Creation (SJC) provides a platform for people with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder to create art. It offers opportunities for them to grow in their arts and develop art as their vocation. Since 1999, SJC has been creating opportunities for art appreciation, communication and connection with the community through courses, exhibitions, workshops and community art projects. Its community art project Our Stories – Memories in Clay received the Award for Arts Promotion in the 15th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards in 2021.

“Clay for Tomorrow” is an art project organized by SJC, with financial support from the Arts Development Fund for Persons with Disabilities. The project, overseen by renowned ceramist and Artistic Advisor Chris Lo, began in 2020 and saw 15 ceramists learning from 5 seasoned ceramists over a span of 3 years, as they developed their craft, learned about their materials, expressed their ideas and embarked on a journey of growth and artistic training. The project features a series of events and exhibitions to share the creative process with the public.
