For those who are interested to learn more about the on-glaze painting techniques from Masako Furukawa, we offer two sessions of hands-on workshop on the opening weekend of the exhibition. The workshop is about on-glaze decoration on high-fired pottery that had been thrown on the wheel by the artist.
On-glaze decoration is a method of decorating pottery, where colour is applied after it has been glazed. The colours will fuse into the glaze when fired and so the decoration becomes durable. Because of the lower temperature with on-glaze decoration, a more varied palette of colour is available than with underglaze decoration (which is applied before glazing).
Masako Furukawa will teach participants how to use specific brush-on techniques to decorate using colours prepared by her. Once those techniques are mastered, participants can use the techniques to decorate their own pieces. Furukawa will present a selection of pre-prepared functional wares made by her husband, Kinya Furukawa.
After the workshop, the students’ pieces will be fired, and you will be able to use it at home.
