The Visegrad Group countries (known as V4, consisting of Czechia, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia), as part of the Czech V4 Presidency, have partnered with the School of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Docomomo Hong Kong to organize an exhibition with the theme of postwar modern architecture of Central Europe and Hong Kong based on “ICONIC RUINS?” created by Czech Centres.

In recent years, V4 countries and Hong Kong have been confronting similar challenges in the conservation of their modern architectural heritage under rapid urban redevelopment. This exhibition, a follow-up to the panel discussions at CUHK School of Architecture on 21 June, will offer interesting perspectives of the paralleled issues in the two contexts in the past.

The exhibition includes two sections. The first is “ICONIC RUINS?”, a traveling exhibition organized by Czech Centres in cooperation with curators from all four countries (under the EU project “Shared Cities”) with a focus on the paralleled development of postwar socialist architecture among V4 countries. Exhibition will be accompanied by selected publications of all V4 countries on the postwar socialistic architecture, as well as 3D (CZ) and mini models (PL) of selected buildings. The 3D models of Czechia were prepared by CVUT Faculty of Architecture and printed in HK by FabLab Hong Kong. Selected photographs will also be shown.

The second section showcases representative examples of modernist architecture in Hong Kong in the form of publications and models of postwar modern architecture.

Exhibition will be open daily 11:00 – 19:00, Block A, 311/312, from June 24 till July 28.

Curatorial Team (V4 section): Anna Cymer, Dániel Kovács, Peter Szalay, Petr Vorlík

Curatorial Team (Hong Kong section): Charles Lai, Han Man, Melody Yiu
