Junji Ito
Junji Ito is hailed to be the most important Japanese horror comic artist since the 1990s. Carrying on the legacy of his two mentors – Kazuo Umezu and Koga Shinichi, he developed his own comic styles which proved to be influential to many of the horror comic artists to come. Junji Ito has created his signature aesthetics of horror and oppression with his peculiar sketched lines and carefully crafted complex scenes, which were described by readers as “terrorizing not only the mind but also the body”. Tomie, the dismembered and incessantly reproduced girl, Hanging Balloons, the aesthetics of horror classic, Lovesick Dead, the viral comics on the internet, and Spiral, theatrically released in Hong Kong, are all celebrated classics of Junji Ito’s artistic creations.
