For 7th Design Talk, we’ll invite an artist and designer, Hiroko Takahashi and 7th successor of MONMAYA, which is a long-established Sendai-tansu manufacturer to share their experience “how to throw light to the traditional techniques and revitalize the industry” with us.
MONMAYA is the most well established brand in Sendai-tansu (Sendai cabinet) manufacturing which is located in the central Sendai, Miyagi-prefecture over 140years, Sendai-tansu has a history of nearly 400 years. In this long history, while taking advantage of excellent and consistent skills of artisans, shapes of Tansu were developed with the changing of social needs. The first transformation of Sendai tansu has come over in the 1950s to adapt westernized Japanese life style.
In their endeavor to further evolve, Kazuhiro Monma, 7th successor of Monmaya decided to start their brand-new collection line, ‘monmaya+’ and welcomed the first art director Hiroko Takahashi, well-known artist for her superb collection with traditional crafts. Together with designers that share their philosophy, they have been striving to attain a level of ‘craftsmanship’ that transcends the globe, across borders and nationalities.
