“Writer” – Kosaku Igami (Koji Yakusho), has reached the prime time of his life. He has three daughters, and his work is a great success.
His concern is his “Mother” (Kiki Kilin) who is going senile. Kosaku, as the elder son, discusses with his siblings on who will take care of Mother. His younger sisters are fed up with the Mother who tends to act childish whenever things do not go as she pleases. Kosaku’s strong-willed daughter Kotoko (Aoi Miyazaki) suggests taking her under their care.
It is revealed little by little about the complicated background of Kosaku being raised not by his Mother, but his grandfather’s mistress. The memories of him being left by Mother, keeps him a certain distance from the family. However, as Mother’s memories quickly start to fade away, ironically, the mother and son relationship starts to reconcile.
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and then Spring again. Mother continues to lose her past as Kosaku departs from his past. The entire family comes together as one. One night, as the family gathers, they talk about how the sound of the old clock is strangely large that night. Just then, they receive one phone call…
