A Union of Mischief is Wang Shang’s first exhibit dedicated entirely to his jewellery. Although both an independent artist and jeweller, his art inspires his jewellery and vice versa. Taking inspiration for his jewellery from geology, minerals and other elements, many of his designs come from his desire to create life forms.

Wang Shang’s jewellery often resembles alien-like organic forms that he describes as imaginary creatures from a sci-fi parallel universe. They are an imitation of nature’s creativity as well as a celebration of human’s technological achievement. His jewellery refers to how people transform natural landscapes with manmade cityscape, which in turn becomes part of nature.

By using diamonds and gemstones in his jewellery, Wang Shang emphasizes the mythology around their commercial and cultural value given by human society. Instead of pessimism or critical denial, he embraces the act of fictionalizing: Wang Shang gives all his jewellery pieces fictional names because he believes that fiction is something worth treasuring.
