BarofSpace / AfterStudio, from July 5 to July 28, is a three-week live architecture performance and collective exploration. The exhibit, which was started by four graduate architecture students in association with the HKU Department of Architecture, attempts to dispel myths about architectural authorship and production through a collaborative process of dismantling an exhibition space.
The daily performance of gradually dismantling the previous exhibition setting is the central characteristic of AfterStudio. What starts as an enclosed interior with four timber stud walls will gradually open up to become a space that accommodates public programs. This un-building process will begin by embracing faults and improvising with materials, opening up new avenues for conversations and spontaneous encounters within the city.
As the physical space opens up during the disassemblage, public activities will be arranged around themes that range from the scale of individual rooms to shared urban spaces. Talks, interviews, and city tours will be used to engage with both the general public and larger architectural and creative communities.
AfterStudio turns into a short-term testing ground for unprofessionalized spatial acts that rethink the role of architecture in wider society. AfterBar takes over the area in the evenings as a gathering spot for shared meals, screenings, short presentations, and conversations about how architecture is evolving in Hong Kong’s urban landscape and popular culture.
