MONMAYA is the most well established brand in Sendai-tansu (Sendai cabinet) manufacturing which is located in the central Sendai, Miyagi-prefecture as it was first founded 140 years ago.
Being particular about ‘genuine inheritance’ their cabinets and drawers are custom made are repaired meticulously by hand using Japanese grown timber, Urushi lacquer and artisan made tools that are spirited by their ingenuity.

Sendai Tansu has a history of nearly 400 years. In this long history, while taking advantage of excellent and consistent skills of artisans, shapes of Tansu were developed with the changing of social needs. At this exhibition, we will show mainly Ko-Tansu(Small sized type) & Chugata-Tansu(Middle sized type) which made in modern era after 1950′s and also newly evolved brand ‘monmaya+’ established in 2012. From products made in 1950′s, we exhibit regular Ko-Tansu called ‘Teiban’ means ‘the standard’ , which was developed by a workshop manager at the time who used to be the Edo woodworking joiner. Another one called ‘Nishaku-Nekoashi’, means the tansu which has 60cm of height and width with cabriole leg, was ordered as wine cabinets. Also we will show the new products series ‘monmaya+’ developed in 2010′s, which are the first collection ‘Console’ and second collection ‘Upright’. ‘monmaya+’ is a brandnew collection line which collaborate with Ms.Hiroko Takahashi, a famous Japanese artist and designer.

Sendai-Tansu is believed that it has unchangeable pure Japanese style, however it has been advanced to fit in westernized life style while the Japanese life style also has been changed since 1950′s. At the exhibition, you will find out how well the traditional technique has evolved with an enterprising spirit to inherit the tradition.
