This is a duo solo exhibition of Margaret Chu and Jess Leung who are artists create with different media.
“Dogs” is the theme of Margaret’s new show. She used to work with corrugated paper to shape animal. Her paper rabbit and rat are the most memorable forms. In this new series of dog, Margaret carved with wood, made reliefs with wooden strips to show different breeds of dog.
“Kids” is a new series of gongbi ink painting of Jess Leung. She studied a genre of Chinese classical painting called “yingxi” (嬰戲) which literally means children playing. Jess created a group of modern yingxi painting reflecting the inspiration from the classical genre.
Margaret Chu graduated from the Fine Arts Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is a sculptor and an art teacher. In 2019 she was awarded a MFA from CUHK and expanded her research into community based practice and historical sites. Margaret is now showing in a Hong Kong / Italy sculpture exchange project “Fusion 2” at the Asia Society Hong Kong. The exhibition will end by 25 June 2023. Soon after the “Dogs” show, Margaret will leave for a 3-month residency at Helsinki International Artist Program, Finland.
Jess Leung graduated from the Academy of Visual Art, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2015. Since her university study, she showed interest in Chinese painting and focused in gongbi ink technique. Jess had participated in several ink painting group exhibitions including the “Ink Global” (2017 and 2021 respectively) and “Transcending the Gongbi Tradition” at Exchange Square, Central (2022). Her works are in the collections of the Hong Kong Baptist University and China City Bank (International).
