As a visual language, comics has its own vocabulary such as panel, speech bubble, onomatopoeia and motion lines. A static scene can be very tensional and a vivid world can be realised in a flat pane.

Apart from story and artwork, design also plays an important role to make a comic book great. In this talk, the founders of the “zbfghk” will have a conversation with comic artist Felix Ip and designer faminik on comic design.

“zbfghk” will talk about comic books and picture books in terms of design and printing, and the visual identity of comics, explaining how design can enhance the value of the work.

Felix and faminik will then join “zbfghk” to share their experience in the collaboration of “Zombiology: Enjoy Yourself Tonight” and discuss Hong Kong comics.

We both like comic books. We like the way it feels when we hold a book in hands and flip the pages. We like all the thoughtful printing ideas. We like to see the familiar language printed on paper and support comic artists who are working hard on the new issues that we look forward to.

Felix Ip (@Felix Ip 葉偉青)
A freelancer specialising in comic, design and illustration. After working as a creative director in the field of digital game and animation for years, he returned to the world of illustration and has created several comic titles, namely “Blood and Steel”, “Hong Kong Infected” and “Zombiology: Enjoy Yourself Tonight”, in recent years.

faminik (@Art of faminik)
faminik has been working as a graphic designer, whose work covers a wide range of areas from newspaper and magazine advertising to book binding and layout design. In recent years, he has extended his work to interface design for mobile games and advertising design. Apart from design, he also creates illustration for comics, novels, albums and other publications.

faminik won The Best Illustration (Unpublished) Award and The Best Illustration (Publication and Editorial) Award in the 2nd and 4th Greater China Illustration Awards respectively. His works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, the United States and Canada.
