“Dreams are the only reality.”
Hailed as one of the most gifted filmmakers ever, Federico Fellini (1920-1993) invented an inimitable cinematic style combining carnivalesque spectacle, personal memory with eccentric fantasy, conjuring a vision of the world in dreamlike imagery and whimsical surrealism.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth, the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society organized the “FELLINI 100″ programme, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong, with the full support of the Consulate General of Italy in Hong Kong. Besides a full retrospective of his cinematic works, “Carnival in a Dream: The Federico Fellini Exhibition” showcases rarely seen collections on loan from the Cineteca di Bologna that taps into the sources of his fertile imagination and sheds light on the vital power of his work.
Combining ingenuity with hard work, Fellini’s dedication to filmmaking is captured in the behind-the-scenes photos and film stills, which offer a glimpse of the maestro at work in constructing his phantasmagorical world, as well as the joyful moments he shared with his cast and crew. Also on display are film posters and Fellini’s hand-drawn sketches, which illuminate his all-round artistic talent in transforming reality-inspired ideas and freewheeling imagination into visual fantasia, leaving behind an enduring legacy that continues to awe and inspire generations of creative spirits.
